Hazardous Area Classification: What It Means for Your Business

Business owners across food and beverage, manufacturing, fuel storage, chemical processing, and agriculture are hearing about hazardous area classification for the first time. Here’s what it actually involves.

If you’ve recently had questions raised about your facility’s compliance, you’re not the only one. Most of them feel the same way you probably do: not entirely sure what it means, or where to even begin. That’s completely fine. This page will walk you through it.

What Is a Hazardous Area Classification?

It’s a formal assessment of the spaces in your facility where flammable gases, vapours, or dusts could be present. Spray booths, distilleries, fuel depots, grain handling areas, chemical storage rooms, food and beverage processing plants. Anywhere that kind of atmosphere can build up during normal operations or under fault conditions.

The assessment identifies these zones and specifies what electrical equipment can safely operate within them. In Australia, this falls under the AS/NZS 60079 standard. It’s what insurers, WorkSafe inspectors, and auditors are increasingly asking businesses to demonstrate, particularly in industries where flammable substances are part of everyday operations.

At its core, it’s about making sure the right equipment is in the right place, with the paperwork to back it up.

Why Is This Coming Up Now?

Insurers have become more thorough when it comes to facilities that work with flammable substances. They want to know that the environments in your operation have been formally assessed and that your electrical equipment meets the relevant standards.

For most business owners, this isn’t a sign that something is wrong. It’s simply a shift in what’s being asked of them. Having a current classification in place means you can answer those questions confidently, and that your coverage is on solid ground if you ever need to make a claim.

What the Process Actually Involves

We come to your site and assess the areas where hazardous atmospheres could exist. We identify the zones, document the requirements, and put together clear, audit-ready reports that satisfy both insurer and regulatory requirements.

We also take the time to walk you through what we find and what it means for your day-to-day operation. You won’t be handed a technical document and left to figure it out on your own. If there’s anything that needs attention, we’ll explain it plainly and talk through your options without the alarm bells.

You Don’t Need to Have It All Figured Out Before You Call
